Did you have a positive role model as a renaissance personality when growing up?

If so: who was this and what was the effect on your life?

  1. Kind of? :)

My Dad probably was more of a positive role model for a renaissance man than I realized. He was a farmer, he was a welder, a truck driver, a business owner, a mechanic. I never really thought of it as such, he just had to do all that to keep the farm working! He used to say Jack of all trades, as if it was a bad thing!

Maybe my “confusion” comes from him always wanting something better for us kids than what he had, so the normal “go to school, get a good job”… don’t stay on the farm…

Interesting to think about it like that now!

  2. Hey Carlin,

    Yes, interesting!

I wonder if your dad’s “go to school, get a good job” mantra was indeed more about the farm life than the renaissance aspect of it.

Having worked on a farm in Switzerland for a short while, I know first-hand how tough this is!

So do you think that you equate having a renaissance personality with something that is not desirable based on your dad’s view and comments?

  3. I was fortunate enough to have two — Dean Smith and my father.

Dean Smith set an incredible example of how to treat people and how to put people before winning, unlike someone else he coached against. Tremendously innovative and very private.

My father has been a true Horatio Alger story and a difficult role model to follow. Always conscientious about doing what’s right in any situation and being 10 years ahead of his time.

Both men never give up and almost always find a way to win fairly.

  4. Tom,

Sounds wonderful and reminds me of my own father – he was a man of great integrity unlike anyone else I know.

They may be hard to follow, but how great having them as role models, don’t you think?

    Thanks for posting!
